Description

Recommendations for GP’s on the detection, assessment and management of patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) have recently been published with the aim of addressing key aspects of the management of MCI in primary care. To support these recommendations this series of 4 podcasts aims to provide information that will assist GP’s in making appropriate diagnoses and provide the most relevant, evidence-based management options and support.
In this episode:

  • Much can be done to help delay the progression of MCI using lifestyle interventions.
  • Apart from cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factor management, there is good evidence that a healthy diet such as the Mediterranean diet or the MIND diet is important, as is physical activity, an evidence based medical food (eg Souvenaid), brain training programs, correcting hearing impairment, avoiding excessive alcohol consumption, social engagement and ensuring the patient has good quality sleep.
  • There is no proven role for acetylcholinesterase inhibitors in the management of any type of MCI.
